He has been a Full Professor of Ecology at the University of Salento, Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences and Technologies, since 2000, and, since 2018, an Associate Researcher at the National Research Council’s Institute of Marine Sciences. At the University of Salento, Alberto Basset is Head of the Ecology Laboratory, Head of the Organisation for Biodiversity and of the Research Infrastructure on Ecosystem Functioning, established through a PON R&I Infrastructure project (BIOforIU), Director of the Observatory on the Health of Mediterranean Ecosystems and of the Museum of Mediterranean Ecosystems at the University of Salento. Previously, he was an Associate Professor of Ecology at the University of Salento from 1998, a Research Fellow at the University of Cagliari from 1984 and a National Research Council Fellow at the Centre for Evolutionary Genetics at the University of Rome ‘La Sapienza’ from 1982. At the University of Salento, Alberto Basset served as Coordinator of the PhD programme in Ecology (2000–2013). and in Ecology and Climate Change (2013–2015), the Master’s degree programme in Ecology (2004–2010) and Coordinator of Interregional University Programmes (2001–2007).

She is currently a research officer in the science and technology department at the Ecology Laboratory of the University of Salento. She is a biologist, holding a degree in Biological Sciences, a Master of Science in Applied Biology and a PhD in Fundamental Ecology. She has also obtained a Level II Master’s degree in Change Management & Social Innovation and a Level I Master’s degree in Teaching Methodologies. She lectures in Ecology on the Master’s degree programme in Primary Education at the University of Salento. She has also gained significant teaching experience at Roma Tre University and on numerous master’s programmes and training courses. Since 2022, she has been a lecturer and trainer in health and safety at the University of Salento. She is the Technical Manager of the Ecology Laboratory, responsible for coordinating laboratory and field activities, research, teaching and training. Her scientific work focuses primarily on the ecology of aquatic ecosystems, biodiversity and ecosystem processes. She has participated in and held technical and scientific responsibilities in numerous national and international projects on biodiversity, sustainability and environmental monitoring. She is committed to science communication and environmental education aimed at both universities and schools. She coordinates training and non-formal learning activities using innovative tools, including serious games and experiential learning programmes. She is the author of scientific publications and a reviewer for international journals, as well as a member of scientific groups and committees at university and national level.
